I've watched Water Boatmen and the similar but larger, Backswimmers many times over the years but never really knew much about them. Wikipedia tells me they're eaten as a delicacy in Mexico, presumably they have bigger ones or an awful lot of them! They spend most of the time at the bottom of ponds, which makes them quite a challenge to photograph, particularly when they use those oar shaped arms to stir up the mud and hide. There aren't many times that I wonder what folk think who come across me taking photos but yesterday, squatting in the middle of a pond apparently taking photos of the toes of my Wellington boots, I must have a particularly peculiar sight. |
